At Mello Insurance, we believe you should know who you are dealing with, which insurers we work with, and how we are paid. This page explains our relationships and any potential conflicts of interest, so you can make an informed decision about your insurance.
Who we are
Mello Insurance is a trade name of Block Enterprises Ltd., an independent insurance brokerage. As a broker, we arrange insurance on your behalf with insurance companies. We do not pay out the claims ourselves — the insurer or reinsurer that underwrites your policy is named on your declarations page.
We are licensed as an insurance brokerage in the following provinces:
- Ontario: Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario (RIBO), Registration No. 4358
- Alberta: License K-2298827-11095876-2023
- British Columbia: License LIC-2020-0022327-R01
- Saskatchewan: License #08155
- Manitoba: License K-42869-2470-2022
The insurers we work with
We place personal property insurance (tenant, condo and homeowners) with a limited number of insurers. We currently work with:
- Agile Sprint (Agile Underwriting Solutions Inc.), underwritten by certain Underwriters at Lloyd’s
- SGI Canada Insurance Services Ltd.
Automobile insurance is available by contacting a licensed broker. We are contracted with SGI Canada Insurance Services Ltd. and/or Coachman Insurance Company for this product line.
Because we work with a limited number of insurers, we can not compare every insurance company available in your province. Our online quote shows the price from the insurer available for your coverage. If you would like us to quote another of our insurers, or to talk through your options, call a licensed broker at 1-306-283-1234. You are always free to get quotes from other brokers or insurers.
How we are paid
We are paid in the following ways:
- Commission: The insurer pays us a commission on each policy we place and renew. Commissions generally range from 10% to 20% of the premium, depending on the insurer and the type of policy.
- Policy fee: We charge a policy fee, which is shown separately on your application and declarations page.
- Contingent profit commission: SGI Canada may pay us an additional annual commission based on the overall growth and claims experience (loss ratio) of all the business we place with them. It is calculated on our total book of business with SGI Canada, not on any individual policy, and is not tied to sales targets. Agile Sprint does not pay us any bonus or additional compensation.
- Premium financing: If you choose a monthly payment plan, your premium is financed through Valet Finance Inc. Finance charges are disclosed on your Premium Finance Agreement.
Commission rates differ between insurers, so we may earn more on one policy than another. If you would like to know how we are paid on your policy, just ask and we will tell you.
Conflicts of interest
A conflict of interest arises when our interests, or our relationships with others, could influence the advice we give you. The potential conflicts in our business are:
- We work with a limited number of insurers, as described above.
- Our compensation varies by insurer and product, and one of our insurers (SGI Canada) may pay us a contingent profit commission, as described above.
Regardless of these relationships, our commitment is to recommend the coverage that best meets your needs, not the coverage that pays us the most. We will always tell you which insurer your policy is placed with, explain your options, and answer any questions about how we are paid.
Our brokers follow the Principles of Conduct for Insurance Intermediaries published by the Canadian Insurance Services Regulatory Organizations (CISRO), the national body of provincial insurance regulators. These principles include putting your interests first, disclosing and managing conflicts of interest, giving advice suited to your needs, and handling complaints fairly and promptly.
